How would you like to be remembered?

A lot of my writing in recent weeks has been about the fact that we are all one: we are all part of the one God, the one creation, the one community on Earth.  Despite our different religions or different beliefs, we all have the same needs, not least of which is love.

Although we are all one, and can think of ourselves as one great Earth community, each of us is unique and each has a unique role to play in this world.  Each of us has talents which are unique to each individual.  No one else has the same relationships, the same opportunities, and the same perspective on the world.

You may look at your life and think that your role is one of homemaker or breadwinner, one of parent, or teacher, or plumber, or secretary.  That role describes what you do, not what you be.

Whilst you are doing whatever role is required in your physical life, you have the opportunity to be whatever you want to be.

You can be an angry, insufferable boss, or a generous helpful guide.  You can be an ungrateful, depressed employee, or an enthusiastic happy worker.  You can be a disagreeable unreliable tradesman, or a friendly efficient service provider.  You can be a bored, intolerant parent, or an unconditionally loving example to your child.

Every situation which presents itself is an opportunity for you to be the person you would like to be.

In every religion there is a version of The Golden Rule: “Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.”  Every situation which arises, gives us an opportunity to consider the consequences of our actions, and to consider how we would like to be treated if we were the being incurring those consequences.

It has been said that lightworkers are those who have a divine purpose to leave the world a better place than how we found it.  In my view, we all have that ability.  It is just a matter of choice.

Sometimes we look at the world and think “What can one person do?”, but if we remember that we are not alone, that we are part of this wonderful Earth community, and part of a greater universal community, we can appreciate that if we require the help of others, then help will be forthcoming.

Sometimes we think that the task is too great, that the odds are against us, that there is no chance of success.  Perhaps, instead of focusing on the bigger picture at this point, we just need to focus on the here and now:  “What can I do, in this moment, to move myself or the world towards the outcome I desire?”

The answer may be as simple as: “Pray.”  You might like to pray for help, for the outcome you desire, or to be shown a way forward.  I am a strong believer in the power of prayer, but if you are not, the answer could lie in following Abraham’s advice to just reach for the best feeling thought that you can muster in relation to the issue at hand, with the aim of finding a way to make peace with the current situation.

I will give you an example of what I mean.

Every day I pray that The New Spirituality will come to this planet.  In The New Spirituality, everyone will realise that we are one.  Every person and every creature on the Earth will be treated with respect, along with Mother Earth herself.  There is world peace.

If I were to watch the nightly news, I would not see much evidence of this coming about, but that doesn’t mean that this is not the world to which we are progressing.  If we have strong faith that everything is happening in divine order, we can see every event as a step on the road towards world peace.  Even an act of war can cause a reaction such that we all have a greater desire for peace.  As more people pray for world peace as a result of an act of war, we have boosted our chances of receiving that.

If we focus our attention on the problem, we are just creating more of the problem.  We need to focus our attention on the solution.  In the case of war, focus on peace.

It is impossible to create peace, whilst we are being war.  As Gandhi once said: “We need to be the change we wish to see in the world.”  Along with world peace, my daily prayers include a prayer for inner peace.

I can create greater inner peace more easily by avoiding watching violent movies on TV, and often this includes the nightly news.

News programmes rarely present good-news stories, largely because they are not sensational enough.  It is hardly newsworthy when one person helps another in a small way, but in a way which is significant to the person receiving the aid.  It may not be newsworthy when individuals from one religion meet with those of another faith and consider their commonality whilst honouring their differences.

This is why natural disasters can become good-news stories, because we often get to see the caring and concern shown by so many people, which in small isolated incidents go unobserved.

If, however, there are no good news stories on the news, and we continue to watch only fearful and violent stories on TV, we are bound to continue to attract fearful and violent thoughts, which attract more of the same.  Far better to watch comedies and, as well as attracting fun and laughter, we are getting some of the ‘best medicine’, and helping to create inner peace and thus world peace.

It is also difficult to create inner peace and world peace whilst we are causing so much stress to so many creatures on our planet.  One of the roles of animals on our planet is to be a source of peaceful energy, to balance the chaotic energy which many humans are creating.  However, instead of being that source of peace, so many animals are living in fear and torment, and this is the energy they are projecting into the world.

Whilst we continue to cause stress to animals in ways such as factory farms, live animal exports, and habitat reduction, we are negating much of our peace initiatives. Ingesting animal products from those who have lived and died in stress further adds to our difficulties in creating inner peace and world peace.

Each of us has God-given talents, and those talents can be used to leave the world a better place than it was before us.  Each of us can consider the consequences of our actions in all that we do, the consequences for all the other beings on the planet in the present and the future, and the consequences for our beautiful planet.  If we create unforeseen consequences, we can pray for these consequences to be ameliorated.  Each of us can be a lightworker.

Matthew 5:14-16

You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid.  No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

I agree with not wanting to watch the nightly news because I am trying to focus on more positives in my life. I loved the line about if we are in a war, then it means we desire peace more. I have read that having a Peace Rally is certainly more powerful than an anti-war protest.
